Ventures — in development

Built once. For everyone with the problem.

Commissioned software solves one business's problem, for that business. A product solves a shared problem for anyone who has it. Both matter — this is the second one, and each venture ships under its own brand.

The model

Why build products at all.

Most businesses with a problem worth solving will never commission custom software for it. That does not make the problem any smaller.

Building custom systems for a living means meeting the same gap over and over, at business after business. Solving it one engagement at a time helps whoever is in front of us and nobody else — and only ever the ones with the budget for a project.

Where the problem is general rather than specific, the honest answer is to build it once, properly, as a product — priced and packaged so that a small business, a non-profit or a team of three can run the same software a commissioned client would have got.

That is the whole point of this side of the company: the same standard of work, reaching far more of the people who need it.

    Name to be announced

Off-the-shelf software for a problem we kept solving one business at a time.

    Who it is for

Built for the businesses and organisations that hit this problem but were never going to commission custom software for it — the same solution, without the project.

    Where it came from

Commissioned work surfaces the same gaps repeatedly. Where a gap is general rather than specific to one business, rebuilding it per client helps one company at a time. Building it once as a product helps everyone who has it.

Need it built for you instead?

If the problem is specific to how your business runs, a product is the wrong shape for it — that is what XU Web Studios is for, and it is shipping now. Both sides of XU Tech Labs are the same team.
